Marrakech in 5 Days: The Itinerary I Share with My Guests
Medina, gardens, Atlas Mountains, Agafay, Essaouira: a five-day itinerary designed to avoid unnecessary travel and the hottest hours of the day.
Five days is the ideal length. It's enough time to see the city without rushing, and to enjoy two excursions beyond its walls. Here is the itinerary I provide to guests who request it, refined over time with their feedback.
Day 1 — The Medina
Begin with the Koutoubia Mosque, which serves as a landmark for the entire city, then head towards the Bahia Palace. Allow an hour: with its painted ceilings and planted courtyards, it showcases the finest 19th-century Moroccan artistry.
Enjoy lunch on a shaded terrace. In the afternoon, visit the Ben Youssef Madrasa—beautifully restored—then delve into the souks, embracing the idea of getting lost. That's part of the experience.
In the evening, experience Jemaa el-Fna. First, find a café terrace for a panoramic view, then descend into the square as the food stalls light up.
A note on negotiation: start at 40% of the initial asking price and proceed calmly. No one takes offense; it's an integral part of the exchange.
The medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985.
Day 2 — Gardens and Gueliz
Visit the Jardin Majorelle right at opening, having purchased your ticket online the day before. By 11 AM, the crowds genuinely detract from the experience. The Yves Saint Laurent Museum is adjacent, so visit them consecutively.
In the afternoon, explore Le Jardin Secret in the medina, or Ménara Gardens for that iconic photo with the Atlas Mountains reflecting in the basin. Afterward, head to Gueliz, the modern district: galleries, boutiques, and cafes.
In the evening, indulge in a hammam. It's the perfect way to relax after two days of walking.
Day 3 — The Atlas Mountains
Just forty-five minutes drive south, the scenery transforms completely. The Ourika Valley offers a river, Berber villages clinging to the slopes, and restaurant terraces where you can dine with your feet in the water. The Setti Fatma waterfalls are a rewarding challenge: an hour and a half round trip, requiring appropriate footwear.
For the more adventurous: Imlil, the starting point for hikes towards Toubkal, offering high-mountain scenery by midday.
Return in the late afternoon.
Day 4 — Agafay or Essaouira
Choose between two options, depending on your preference.
Agafay, forty minutes away: while there are no sand dunes, its desert of stone and ochre hills is well worth the detour. Enjoy lunch at a desert camp, a camel ride or quad biking, and a sunset that everyone talks about.
Essaouira, 2 hours 30 minutes away: a fortified port city on the Atlantic, with ramparts, grilled fish on the quay, constant wind, and an atmosphere a world away from Marrakech. It's a long day, but a guaranteed change of scenery.
Day 5 — Unplanned Day
Enjoy the pool, a leisurely breakfast without an alarm, and return to the medina for any purchases you spotted on the first day – it always ends up this way.
Worth buying: cooperative argan oil, spices, babouches (leather slippers), Tamegroute ceramics, and a rug if you have an hour to spare.
A Few Pointers
Use small taxis for short distances; ensure the meter is used or agree on a price before getting in. Hiring a driver for the day is affordable and simplifies excursions.
The dirham cannot be taken out of the country: withdraw cash locally and keep some on hand for the souks.
There's no strict dress code, but covering your shoulders and knees will ensure a more relaxed welcome in the medina.
From June to September, plan activities before 11 AM and after 5 PM. Spending the afternoon by the pool is hardly a punishment. See when to visit Marrakech to choose your dates, and the official tourism website for Ramadan dates, which change annually.
Golfers: check our course guide to fit in a couple of tee times during this itinerary.
Where to Stay
This itinerary involves a lot of back-and-forth between the city and its surroundings. Accommodation outside the medina but conveniently located on main routes saves significant travel time – this is one of the points elaborated in villa, riad, or hotel in Marrakech.
Villa Soukarya is located on the Amelkis golf course, twenty minutes from Jemaa el-Fna and on the road to Ourika. It offers five suites, 750 m² of space, and a swimming pool perfect for July afternoons. Practical details are available in the rental guide.
